Gackstetters Rachel and Jason

Alaska Cruise
July 24 to August 1, 2004

The Boat

First things first. The mandatory lifeboat drill.

Our boat: 13 floors, 2300 guests and 1500 crew.

Our cabin is just behind the last lifeboat.

The lobby.

The main pool.

One of the lounges.

An English style pub.

The theater.

One of ten restaurants.

Another restaurant.

A chess game that ended in a draw.

The bridge.

First stop: Juneau

Juneau is only accessible by air or water.

A salmon hatchery and one unlucky fish falling out of the ladder.

Menden-hall Glacier, on the outskirts of Juneau.

You don't come to Alaska to get a tan, but this was the only day it rained on us.

Second stop: Skagway

Downtown Skagway. (Actually all of Skagway.)

Panning for gold in Skagway. Note: there was never any gold in Skagway. However, we did find a few flakes in each pan.

The White Pass and Yukon Express Railroad passing a waterfall.

Thousands followed this path to the Yukon, each with a Candian Mountie mandatory requirement of 2000 lbs of supplies. Later, the railroad was built.

Jason's trip highlight was riding the train.

Third "stop": Glacier Bay

Lots and lots of glaciers.

More glaciers.

And more glaciers.

Fourth stop: Ketchikan

Ketchikan

The docks.

Ketchikan is known for its totem poles.

Old town Ketchikan. These houses used to be a welcome site for the gold rush men (wink, wink).

Fifth stop: Victoria, Canada

While Nancy and Grammy visited the gardens, Rachel, Jason and Tim had much more fun on a pedicab city tour.

The Empress Hotel

And finally back to Seattle
